How to Get Water Out of a Charging Port Safely
If your iPhone displays “Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector” or your Android shows “Moisture detected in USB port”, do NOT plug in a charger.
- Never connect a wired charger while the port is damp—doing so triggers rapid pin corrosion and permanent short-circuit damage.
- Do NOT use compressed air, cotton swabs, toothpicks, or hair dryers inside the port opening.
- Tap the device gently against your palm with the connector pointing downwards to remove excess water.
- Place the phone in a dry area with natural airflow and wait at least 5 hours before attempting to recharge.
- If you must charge in an emergency and your phone supports Qi/MagSafe wireless charging, you can use a wireless charger once the phone back is dry.
Official Manufacturer Drying Instructions (Apple & Android)
Both Apple Support and Android hardware manufacturers provide strict protocols for drying a wet connector. Follow these 4 steps:
Unplug Everything Immediately
Disconnect cables, headphones, or adapters immediately from the port. If a prompt offers an “Emergency Override” to charge anyway, do NOT accept unless in a genuine life-safety emergency.
Tap Downward Against Your Palm

Wait at Least 5 Hours
Capillary moisture inside deep USB-C contacts requires several hours to fully evaporate. Apple recommends waiting at least 5 hours before reattaching a charging cable.
Dangerous Methods to Avoid (Warranty Voiding)
Cotton buds, rolled paper towels, and toothpicks fray or break inside the port, bending sensitive contact pins and packing debris into the corners.
Excess heat softens the waterproof seal adhesive holding your phone frame together and can cause thermal runaway in lithium batteries.
Compressed gas blast pressure easily exceeds the IP68 barrier threshold, forcing moisture deep into microphone membranes and logic board cavities.
Rice dust forms an acidic starch paste on damp copper connector pins, accelerating corrosion and permanently destroying charging ability.
What If the Moisture Alert Won't Go Away?
If your phone has been drying for more than 24 hours and the liquid detection warning still appears every time you plug in a cable, either:
- Corrosion or salt residue has formed across the pins, creating an electrical bridge.
- The liquid-detection sensor has suffered an internal short.
- The charging cable or accessory itself is wet/corroded (try a different certified cable).
If a fresh certified cable also triggers the warning after 24 hours of drying, take the device to an authorized service provider for professional port cleaning or replacement.
