Phone Dropped in Water? The First 10 Minutes Emergency Action Protocol

Dropping your phone in water triggers immediate panic, but the first 10 minutes determine whether your device survives or suffers fatal electrolysis damage. Modern smartphones boast IP67 or IP68 water resistance, but these ratings degrade over time due to drops, micro-cracks, and aging adhesive.

Step 1: Retrieve and power down immediately. If your phone is submerged, every fraction of a second counts. Electrical currents passing through wet traces cause rapid galvanic corrosion. If the display is still on, power down immediately.

Step 2: Strip cases and accessories. Remove silicone or plastic cases immediately, as they trap pockets of liquid directly against microphone openings, speaker ports, and charging pins.

Step 3: Blot, do not shake violently. Violent shaking spreads droplets inward into sensitive camera sensors and display backlights. Instead, blot thoroughly with a clean microfiber or lint-free cotton cloth.

Step 4: Tap speaker opening gently on your palm. Hold the phone with the primary bottom speaker grille pointing downward and tap the device gently against your palm to dislodge bulk water droplets.

Step 5: Air drying and acoustic ejection. Place the device upright in a room with moving air (such as near an open window or desktop fan). Once exterior moisture has been dabbed away, run an online water eject sound to evacuate moisture from speaker mesh.
